The Nature Of Social Bulling

Social bulling involves name-calling, verbal insults, and excluding someone from a group. It is more subtle than physical bulling, which involves physical aggression and violence. But social bulling is serious. It can be very harmful not only to the targets, but also to the bullies and the bystanders who watch. Doing nothing to stop such bulling creates an environment where people say mean things to each other, spread nasty rumors, and exclude kids from social groups. One day, you might be the bully or the bystander, but the next day everything might turn around and you may be the victim! No one can feel safe!

Social bulling is also making nasty jokes or paying pranks to humiliate someone. It can also be excluding someone or intentionally forcing someone out of a social group. The target loses friends and feels alone, ashamed, and fearful.

“My friend is being bullied. We do not go to the same school so I can’t hang out with her. Girls are spreading all these bad rumors about her on the Internet. I read them and I know they are not true. Now my friend’s getting this really bad reputation and no one likes her. She is really sad. She has no on to hang out with. I do not know how to help her.” Jessica, age 13
